I've been following your instructions today, and discovered the following: The larger the mint-logo.png file, not only the larger that the logo appears on the splash screen, but also the higher that the logo is positioned on the screen. Using GIMP, I have scaled the png file down to a size that I like, but the logo is still too high on the screen.

The old 2007 logo is bad. It doesn't look like a leaf, it doesn't look like anything. All alignments and spacings are messed up. The colour is also very bad. It's Linux Mint, not Linux Tea, Linux Lawn or Linux Lime. In case you didn't know, it looks like this: The new logo by Clem is a bit better.
